Obituary

Beryl J. (Shaw) Small., 90, of Alden died early Thursday morning July 4, 2024. Dedicated wife to Edward for 66 years and loving mother of Mary (Ken) Little, Edward (Mary Jo) Small, Robert (Brenda) Small and Constance (Jeffrey) Bunger. Loving grandmother of Cicely, Eddie, Erin, Emily, Sarah, Eric, James and Ethan and loving great grandmother of Abilene.  No prior visitation.  A Memorial Service will be held at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, Alden, NY on Saturday, July 27 at 9:30 AM.  Arrangements by the Charles Meyer Funeral Home.

Born in Cardiff, South Wales, UK, Beryl's life took a momentous turn when she met and married her husband, Edward. As a young bride in 1956, she boldly emigrated to the US, leaving behind her familiar world to embrace a new future with her husband, stateside. Together, their journey took them and their young family from Maine to Florida, ultimately settling in Alden in 1973.

Beryl embraced life with boundless enthusiasm, seeking new challenges while remaining a dedicated homemaker.  She excelled in diverse pursuits and her entrepreneurial spirit thrived. For many years, Beryl spoke to community groups, delivering a program she developed - A Birdwalk Through the Bible. Not one to let the dust settle under her feet, Beryl earned blue ribbons at the Erie County fair for floral arranging and went on to create a thriving small business arranging wedding flowers.

After raising her 4 children, Beryl earned her Associate's degree in Dietetic Sciences from Erie County Community College, going on to become a dietician. Even after retirement, she remained a lifelong learner, eagerly embracing the digital age and welcoming the opportunity to travel.

Beryl's love for knitting was profound. Having learned to knit from her mother, she delighted in creating beautiful gifts for her family and friends. More than skill, knitting was both meditative and an act of love for Beryl. Her generosity and kindness were evident in her smile, kind words, and thoughtful gestures.

Always active in her community, Beryl was a devoted church member of St. Aidan's serving in the Altar Guild and, alongside her husband, managed the Alden Marilla Community Food Pantry for almost 15 years. Her legacy of love, learning, and service will be cherished by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Beryl's memory may be made to St. Aidan's Episcopal Church or One Spirit | Support for The Lakota People of Pine Ridge Reservation (onespiritlakota.org), a charity special to Beryl's heart for many years.  Share your condolences at meyerfuneralhome.com
