KOSTECKY, Doris Elizabeth (née Weisbeck), age 98 of Alden, New York died peacefully on January 7, 2019 in the home in which she was born. Beloved wife of 42 years to the late Michael Kostecky; loving mother of Karen (Richard) Penfold of Orchard Park, NY, Joanne (A. James) Dearlove of West Chester, PA and Michael Kostecky of Alden; cherished grandmother of Patrick (Mary Carol) Penfold of Holland NY, Alissa (Chuck) McGrory of West Chester PA, Betsy (John) Sullivan of Williamsville NY, Emily (Daniel) Boglioli of Croton on Hudson NY, Kristina (Carlos) Flores of Austin TX, Michael (Nicole) Penfold of Orchard Park NY; great-grandmother of Abigail Sullivan, Joseph Sullivan, Rebecca Sullivan, Sean McGrory, Brendan McGrory, Colin McGrory, Ella McGrory, Curtis Penfold, Luke Penfold, Madelyn Boglioli, Dominic Penfold, and Damien Penfold. Loving youngest sister of the late Richard Joseph (late Arlie) Weisbeck of Alden, the late Olive Clara (late Harold) King of Houston TX, the late Leonard Anthony (late Betty) Weisbeck of Alden and the late Joseph Albert (late Louise) Weisbeck of Florida; also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Born to Clara Elizabeth (née Kegler) and Joseph Anton Weisbeck of Alden NY in the summer of 1920, Dorry was the third of 5 children born into the same home in which she passed in Alden. She attended St. John's R.C. Elementary School and then graduated Alden Central High School. Following high school, Doris graduated from Chown's Business School in Buffalo. Doris worked for Worthington Corporation in downtown Buffalo where she met her husband. She spent several years in Houston, TX helping her older sister Olive with her young family. There, she also worked for Shell Oil Company. She moved back to Alden and married Michael Kostecky on August 29, 1946, where they later welcomed their three children. They enjoyed 42 years of wedded bliss until Michael's death in 1988.
Doris lovingly cared for her invalid mother at home for 21 years before she passed in 1971. Active in her parish, Dorry volunteered and worked for St. John the Baptist Parish both in the rectory and the school. An avid artist, Dorry learned to paint from her father and shared that lifelong passion with her brother Lenny. Both could be found at the annual Alden Art Festival in the fall exhibiting their oil paintings in their retired years. Dorry was an active member of the Alden Art Club for many years. Her hobbies included golf, cross country skiing, bowling, swimming, hiking and walking for most of her adult years. Many could find Dorry walking on any given day in Alden Village up to the recent past.
Forever an animal lover, Dorry was known for decades to rescue stray kitties and care for her own pets with much love. She also cared so much that she would catch the feral kitties in her yard and take them to be spayed or neutered and then release them again, all the while carrying scraps and warm milk out to her barn for them over the winter when food was scarce. Even at the end of life, Doris enjoyed visits from her great-grandanimals that included bunnies, dogs and kitties.
Doris was an active, independent woman until just before her death. Up until a few years ago, Doris was driving and also could be found pushing residents at a nursing home facility to and from Mass or walking in the village of Alden to and from daily mass at St. John's. A lifetime devoted Alden-ite, Dorry would take her grandchildren (when they were young) to the Alden Ball Drop on New Year's Eve, as well as walking with them to Neeland's Ice Cream Parlor for a treat.
For many years, Doris enjoyed traveling, especially to West Chester to visit her family, as well as traveling to Oberammergau, Germany for the Passion Play and Hilton Head Island, SC to watch the Heritage Golf Tournament, but her most favorite place to be was on her front porch with friends and family! Many thanks to all who stopped by for a visit or a quick hello while Dorry was on her porch!
Doris will be remembered for her kind spirit, loving smile and devotion to her family and her faith. All who knew her will miss her. Dorry and her family wishes to thank the many aides and nurses who cared for her, especially her Hospice nurses. All were wonderful and lovingly cared for her at home, allowing her to have her wish and die where she was born 98 years prior.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Dorry's life at St. John the Baptist Church on 2021 Sandridge Road in Alden, NY on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 10:30 AM. There is no prior visitation. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Doris may be made to Hospice Buffalo ( www.hospicebuffalo.org ) or St. John the Baptist School at 2028 Sandridge Road, Alden, NY 14004.
