Obituary

Spoly-Henry. Of Alden, NY, passed away Saturday October 19, 2019 at the age of 94. Beloved husband of Mary (Kawecki) Spoly for 63 years; dear father of Chester (Barbara) Spoly, Marcia Spoly, Rose (Art) Zwilling, Roy  (Dodi) Spoly; loving grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather to many.
A living piece of history, Henry was a  WWII veteran who was one of the first to land on Omaha Beach and went on to Czechoslovakia . He was shot in the leg and still carried two of his military brothers back to safety which earned him the Purple Heart. He was known as "Lefty" during his boxing years for his tough left hook. His many stories of breaking horses, military experiences, boxing, and working/traveling on boats kept many generations of friends and family fascinated with the life he lived. For those lucky enough to join his Sunday dinners, he was an amazing cook who made the best roast beef, sweet cabbage, mashed potatoes and gravy and always had polka playing in the background. As recently as July, he enjoyed dancing any time a polka was on. Henry also loved a good game of anything he could bet you a quarter or more for, family get togethers, and keeping that lawn mowed and driveway snow blowed.
Henry was a welder at Blaw Knox for 30+ years and once retired served as a guard at the Erie County Home and in his 80s still worked as a dishwasher at Ripa's to stay busy. He served as a volunteer at the Erie County Nursing Home for 10 years wheeling patients to and from church every Sunday.
The family will be present to receive friends Tuesday, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Charles Meyer Funeral Home, 13228 Broadway, Alden. Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John The Baptist, 2021 Sandridge Rd. Alden Wednesday at 10 am.  Share your condolences at meyerfuneralhome.com
