Smith-Nicholas J. of Alden, NY passed away December 30, 2025 at the age of 89. Beloved husband of the late Gretchen Smith; dear father of Theresa (Steven) Subsara, Melissa (Ralph) Gucinski, Amy (Mike) Talluto, Nicholas and Christopher.; loving grandfather of Matthew (Connie) Regan, Steven (Brittany) Subsara, Kristina Subsara, Samuel (Kelsey) Regan, Reiner and Maxwell Gucinski and Abbey and Gina Smith; great-grandfather of Ryan Regan and Oliver Subsara; brother of David (Patricia) Smith and the late Barbara Schultz. Family will be present at the CHARLES MEYER FUNERAL HOME, 13228 Broadway Alden, NY on Monday, January 5th from 3-7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John's RC Church Alden, NY on Tuesday, January 6th at 11 AM. (please assemble at church).
Nicholas was born to Nicholas and Caroline Smith on September 29, 1936. He was raised in East Aurora where he attended school and met his future wife, Gretchen Petre. After High School he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served 4 years. Nick and Gretchen moved to Alden in the fall of 1972. They raised their 5 children and were active in their community. He worked for National Fuel Gas until his retirement in 1996. Nicholas and Gretchen were married for 62 years before her passing in 2022.
Nick was an avid sportsman and hunter from a young age. He was a member of Allied Sportsmen's Club for years serving as President for some time. He shot pistol competitively and often ran events and raised funds to help support their endeavors.
Nick was a member of the Crittenden Volunteer Fire Company and held the offices of Chief as well as Assistant Chief, Chairman of Board of Directors, Safety Officer, Captain, Public Relations Officer and Fire Police throughout his time there. His response to emergency calls and dedication to this organization throughout the many years positively impacted his local community.
Nick was a member of St. John's Church and all of his children attended St. John's School. During those years he and his wife served as President couple of the St. John's Home School Association and he was also a member of the Holy Name Society. In recent years Nick was active in Alden's Senior Citizens. He held the office of treasurer and was a regular at the monthly meetings. Share your condolences at meyerfuneralhome.com
